Microscopic optical buffering in a harmonic potential
In the early days of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger noticed that oscillations of a wave packet in a one-dimensional harmonic potential well are periodic and, in contrast to those in anharmonic potential wells, do not experience distortion over time. This original idea did not find applications up to now since an exact one-dimensional harmonic resonator does not exist in nature and has not been ...
متن کاملStudies of bosons in optical lattices in a harmonic potential
We present a theoretical study of bose condensation and specific heat of non-interacting bosons in finite lattices in harmonic potentials in one, two, and three dimensions. We numerically diagonalize the Hamiltonian to obtain the energy levels of the systems. Using the energy levels thus obtained, we investigate the temperature dependence, dimensionality effects, lattice size dependence, and ev...
متن کاملNon-harmonic potential of a single beam optical trap.
Since the invention of optical traps based on a single laser beam, the potential experienced by a trapped specimen has been assumed harmonic, in the central part of the trap. It has remained unknown to what extent the harmonic region persists and what occurs beyond. By employing a new method, we have forced the trapped object to extreme positions, significantly further than previously achieved ...
متن کاملA comparison of optical buffering technologies
We describe the practical and fundamental limitations of the more prominent optical buffering approaches. The architectural implementation and needs of an optical packet switch are used as a foundation for the study. We also present initial results for a buffered, all-optical, 40 Gb/s packet switch. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملMicroscopic T-Violating Optical Potential: Implications for Neutron-Transmission Experiments.
We derive a T-violating P-conserving optical potential for neutron-nucleus scattering, starting from a uniquely determined two-body ρ-exchange interaction with the same symmetry. We then obtain limits on the T-violating ρ-nucleon coupling g ρ from neutron-transmission experiments in 165 Ho. The limits may soon compete with those from measurements of atomic electric-dipole moments.
